Dear readers:
Eleven years ago, recognizing the need for an independent voice in Davis, I started the Davis Vanguard. I didn’t recognize at the time where that journey would take me, I only knew I had to take it in order to get the truth out.
People always ask, why are you constantly asking for donations, and I’ll tell you why – we made the choice to become a non-profit news organization. I wasn’t seeking to get rich and I didn’t want to be beholden to a bunch of wealthy interests.
At the same time, as our work progresses and our mission expands, we need to find ways to raise more money. And we are working on those. We’ve been ramping up our subscriptions this year to close our fund gap, we are working on getting grant funding for our expanding number of special projects and our goal is to be fiscally sound by the end of 2018.
But in the meantime, there are those pesky bills to pay. As I told some folks yesterday, the problem is those stories are not going to report themselves and our employees, they are not going to pay themselves.
We set a goal of raising $3000 in December over and above our normal revenue and we have $290 left to raise.
