If you did not know that they were there in advance, you would have missed them. I had more people send me the counter-announcement on this than on any other item. In retrospect, the concern about it was important but the main event far over-shadowed this one.
The event was organized by Ryan Clumpner, a UC Davis student who grew up in Davis. When I knew him he was not only my neighbor but also a student of mine in a couple of Davis Political Science Classes. He has been one of the leaders of the UC Davis College Republicans and worked in the 2004 Gary Podesto campaign against Mike Machado.
Among the other participants is Briana Bilbray, daughter of Southern California Congressman Brian Bilbray. Bilbray recently won election again in Duke Cunningham’s seat and illegal immigration is the centerpiece of his campaign planks.
Reasonable people can disagree on immigration policy–this blog post is not about honest disagreements on public policy. It is about insensitive, insulting, mocking, and unacceptable behavior by educated or should-be educated college students who decided that their best form of expression was a mocking game of capture the flag.
Illegal Immigrant Capture the Flag
Si Se Peude!!The Rules:
1. Team Illegal Immigrants must outnumber Team INS
2. Team INS must play with their hands tied behind their backs
3. Team INS plays defense the whole game
4. “Amnesty” will be granted to all tagged members of Team Illegal Immigrants every 10 minutes
5. All other rules apply only to Team INS
“We choose to express our opinions regarding illegal immigration in friendly, collegiate manner. On our lunch break, over 20 members of the Davis College Republicans will participate in a game of Capture the Flag. We believe this is an appropriate allegory that effectively demonstrates how our government currently refuses to enforce its own laws regarding immigration, at the expense of the public good,” said Ryan Clumpner, Chairman of the California College Republicans and a student at UC Davis.
“We believe that the leftists choice to walk out of classes in order to make a political statement supporting illegal immigration is an appalling act of disrespect toward the hardworking California taxpayers who make our affordable education possible. Those same taxpayers also bear the burden of paying nearly $10 billion in costs to the state of California annually incurred by illegal immigration.”
In any case, it seems that the protest while it garnered some media coverage, largely fell on deaf ears, vastly dwarfed by the hundreds of students who marched in support of health care, workers’ rights, reform to immigration policy, and against the war. Nevertheless, it is important to draw people attention to this event and show it for the childish and juvenile mockery that it was.
I had long since left the scene as the main march was the story of the day. According to reports in the California Aggie, the game never got underway.
According to bystander Kyle Flick, a junior political science major at UC Davis, the capture-the-flag game never played out.
“People from the rally came over with concerns with the DCR activity,” Flick said. “After the main group of the rally walked straight through DCR, a smaller group stayed behind and surrounded DCR. The smaller group kept growing, though.”
Flick went on to say that DCR members were outnumbered more than 2 to 1.
“They must have felt intimidated,” Flick said.

What world do you live in??. The Republicans accomplished their protest with what looks like no police presence, (from your pictures). Since you have really good pictures of the first protest maybe you could contact DPD and UCDPD and find the total cost to us taxpayers for yesterdays Police supervision. Please add the Court costs as well. Please explain why educated or should-be educated union organizers couldn’t stage a protest without it costing me money.

Honestly Burt I could care less if you have to pay a few more extra cents on your taxes as the result of this. The Republicans required a police escort to leave. Get over it, that’s the cost of democracy, it’s well worth it over the alternative.

Is that a crime?
Actually, I’d never heard Imus before he was fired, except the clips of his show that used to play on Howard Stern. Wasn’t his show on at 3 am?
Stern loathed Imus — that’s all I knew about him before the Rutgers’ controversy.
I suppose, though, that you would find Stern unacceptable, too.

their lives were in no more danger than the may day marchers were on the edge of rioting, and necessary to dress up in riot gear against.
the police love to overdo these things, i suspect because they think they’re preventing riots with their stern presence. the college republicans have heckled and disrupted nearly every on-campus left rally on the quad, and never gotten their asses kicked for it, and certainly never needed a police escort for actual protection.
it’s not like the protesters asked for a large police presence to accompany them. if you’ve got problems with the cost of policing a city, take it up with the police.

Why did you feel that it was of interest to identify the parents of these protesters, and tell us what they do for a living? That seems odd.

I think “Anonymous” and Don Shor are making a big deal out of revealing background info. regarding who the Republican protesters were.
DPD said that he was once a neighbor and a student of his and that his father volunteers for the city. So what?
It’s good to know background information on people. Sometimes it can shed light on where they got their beliefs…sometimes it doesn’t.
Enough with secrecy. Transparency is a good thing. Transparency is an especially good thing when hate speech and actions are involved as they were with the attempted actions by the College Republicans.
Besides, they should learn at a young age to actually debate the issues instead of attempting to use hateful “wedge” tactics like the tactics their Grand Ol’ Party (GOP) is currently using.

Thank you for pointing out that Briana Bilbray is the daughter of Southern CA Congressman Brian Bilbray.
It’s sad to see that the “apple” has not fallen far from the tree. In this case, her father. It’s very, very sad.
As you stated Doug, “Bilbray recently won election again in Duke Cunningham’s seat and illegal immigration is the centerpiece of his campaign planks.”
If all Bilbray can do is win an election with fear tactics it does not say much about his character as a candidate or as a human being.
Unfortunately, his beautiful daughter thought it was the right thing to do. She looks very uncomfortable with her fellow “protesters.” Hopefully she will open her eyes and learn more about various issues while she’s a student at UCD instead of just limiting herself to the narrow Republican views her father has exposed her to.

While I find the DCR’s “game” a disgusting tactic, obviously designed to outrage people, I find it disturbing that the other protesters would not allow them their Freedom of Speech. This is America, correct? Isn’t Freedom of Speech one of the reasons this country is so attractive to immigrants seeking a better life?

I commend what the college republicans did, they showed us what a travesty our immigration policy is. And what they did was wrong? Not any more wrong than sitting in a major street and getting arrested, wich waste my money, your money and everyone money that could be spent on so many better things!!!

Obviously these sophmoric students are not ready to graduate. The University certainly needs to do more to educate them. Still I think they did learn something about the immigration issue, that people aren’t going to put up with this sort of hateful nonsense. Hopefully they also learned that their rich spoiled white priviledged trust fund scene does not mean that the rest of the world is not going to suffer their abuse.
Yes, if nazi’s want to march in Skokie they can and if these kids want to play their games they can too but remember hate begats hate. If you think you can do it and people are just going to take it you are wrong.

Stern is deplorable to women and any living, breathing, thinking, intelligent human being. Not over my head. I simply don’t wish to listen to his garbage. It’s a choice that I make.
Secondly, It’s absolutely wonderful that we live in the United States of America. A country built by immigrants. A country where Republicans and Democrats can argue and disagree. A country where students and members of the public can exercise their right to protest and participate in civil disobedience leading to arrest. A country where uninformed college Republicans can use wedge issues to mis-inform other students.
I would not have it any other way.

You want irony how about this. Ken Mehlman the ex-chairman of the Republican Ntional Committee has an article in The Politico today entitled: Hispanic Outreach Crucial to GOP. So I guess these kids will help perpetuate the Republican minority in California that has made California a solidly Democratic state since Pete Wilson played the immigration card in 94. Nice work College Republicans I’m sure your party is happy with your efforts. I know the Democrats are laughing all the way to the ballot box.

Had one person been injured or killed as a result of the police not having been there, we’d never have heard the end of how the Davis Police neglect the city’s citizens and never show up at any events. They can’t win, can they? I for one was reassured to see police presence out there (particularly in light of recent events on other college campuses…).

I must not be that intelligent, then. FWIW, about half of Stern’s Sirius audience is female. They must be the half who have a sense of humor. If “deplorable” means that Stern plays up sex, well that’s true. But adults who are afraid of sex and sex-humor are usually hiding something in their closets, a la Ted Haggard. I’m sure Haggard would say Stern is “deplorable,” too.

“Stern is deplorable to women and any living, breathing, thinking, intelligent human being.”
I must not be that intelligent, then. FWIW, about half of Stern’s Sirius audience is female. They must be the half who have a sense of humor. Since Rifkin wonders where the sense of humor went, perhaps we should play this game on the Quad. It is more accurate.
Republican Capture the Flag with Osama bin Laden
The Rules:
1. Osama team will capture the flag and retreat to the Library.
2. Republicans will attempt to retreive the flag from the Coffee House.
3. Republican team will insist the flag is in the Coffee House and must dismantle the Coffee House to find it.
4. Republican team will insist that even though they didn’t find the flag in the Coffee House, it must have been there in the first place, but was smuggled to an adjacent building; perhaps Wellman, which also poses a threat.
5. Republican team will question patriotism of anyone who questions the actions taken against the Coffee House.
6. Republican team will forget what happened in Rule 1.

capture this: Sure, why don’t you go ahead and play that game? Hope you have fun!
And you know what we College Republicans are gonna do in response? Nothing! We won’t get in your way. We won’t try and surround you, we won’t bus in people from other campuses to intimidate you, and we basically won’t give a damn.
Why not? Because playing games which make light of serious issues is a perfectly reasonable form of political expression. There’s nothing especially offensive about it. Even if there were, we still wouldn’t try and stop you, because (with a few tiny exceptions) you have a right to free speech even when that speech is offensive.
In short, we fully respect your right to free political expression. Now won’t somebody please respect ours?
PS. Your game isn’t particularly funny and there’s several flaws in the analogy… but then again I guess the same is true for ours.

Dear Anonymous 7:19pm
You still don’t get it. Why don’t you check out my post at 2:57pm. I guess you want to remain a minority party in this state for a long time. Well just keep up the good work. You have no idea how much damage you are doing to your beloved Republican Party.

“There’s nothing especially offensive about it.”
Well I was offended. So too were a number of other people. So I’d I think that is a false assertion.

With regards to freedom of speech issues, DCR should not have been allowed to even try the event in the first place because they did not have the proper permits for the area– The Protesters Did. Yes, I don’t think the protesters acted appropriately, especially with saying “Get out of our country” towards DCR, but they’re point about DCR Trivializing the very risky and potentially lethal struggle it is to enter this country and try to have a new life, I find very appropriate.
Oh, and when your National Chairman agrees (to a degree) with California Democratic Party Chair Art Torres who in February asked your state chair to condemn your actions, you know somethings wrong.

well, i don’t think any group ought to need a permit to demonstrate on the quad, even if they are obnoxious. if you’re going to need major university logistics or facilities it’d be fair to let them know ahead of time, but we have the freedom to assembly and speak, last i checked. as long as you’re peaceable and not too disruptive, it ought to be fine.
the quad is a big place, by design. colleges are some of the last places in this country with public town squares, democratic spaces open to all. the more people that use them as such, the better.

First of all, YES everyone is entitled to freedom of speech, but what DCR did was a SLAP IN THE FACE, to the davis community who is celebrating LA RAZA CULTURAL DAYS, and it was OBVIOUSLY and strategically planned out to also be played on May 1st, which in international workers day. Did they forget who picks their fruit and cleans up after them on campus??.. who’s sweat and hard work this country was build up from??… dont tell me they’re willing to go out in the fields and do the work that many HARD WORKING immigrant families have to do??… and if they’re so angry at the immigration rates, they should stop to think why people immigrate in the first place. Do they really think that people LIKE leaving their home, to come to an unknown place, be treated badly and have to assimilate to that culture, follow their rules, pay taxes and still not be treated as equals??.. yes i said pay taxes because illegal immigrants still pay taxes, and if you’re sooo angry at where youre tax money is going to then why not target the coorporations that get by not paying taxes because of loopholes and connections they have with our government officials??.. and no immigrants aren’t benefiting from YOUR money, many are too afraid to go and apply for government aid for fear of deportation. So please get your facts straight, and if DCR wasn’t trying to “insult” anyone then maybe they should’ve read up on the “PRINCIPLES OF COMMUNITY” that everyone at UCDavis signs when we first get here, they broke those and insulted many of their fellow students. It is sad to see that even now in the 21st century, people are close minded and ignorant. IMMIGRANT RIGHTS ARE HUMAN RIGHTS!! … oh yeah and one more thing… if youre sooo mad at immigrants be mad at you’re ancestors, because PILGRIMS WERE THE FIRST IMMIGRANTS!!!…

“oh yeah and one more thing… if youre sooo mad at immigrants be mad at you’re ancestors, because PILGRIMS WERE THE FIRST IMMIGRANTS!!!…”
The first immigrants to the Americas were not the Pilgrims. The Pilgrims were not only not the first white people to migrate to North America, they were not even the first white English settlers.
The first immigrants were the Siberian Asians, 12,000 years ago or more, who became the so-called American Indians.
The first whites to emigrate to North America were the Vikings, roughly 600 years before Jamestown colony was founded (1607). The Pilgrims didn’t arrive until 1620.

Ryan has emailed a request for me to remove the information about his parents off the blog. I always like to add some context to who people are, especially if they are tied in with this community, however, he has reported receiving death threats and other attacks for his involvement in this incident.
While I disagree with his views and even his actions on this issue, I do not think he deserves any death threats for his involvement.
Thus I have removed any reference to his parents.
I hope those who read this blog are not among those who have issued these attacks.

If that is true it does not speak well for the people involved and Davis in general. It is fine to disagree with people but it is downright antisocial to threaten people over what they believe.
I am a Democrat and I hope we can thump the Republicans in the next election. Misguided threats like the ones described here do not help our cause and in fact can be used by the other side to ridicule us. It also looks bad when people walk through demonstations and when police have to be used to protect demonstrators. We value freedom of speech and we believe in tolerance. You can not believe one way and act in a different way.SAH
