Delaine Eastin Endorses Cecilia Aguiar-Curry for Assembly

The State Assembly Race is starting to heat up.  On Monday, the Cecilia Aguiar-Curry announced it has received the endorsement of former California Superintendent of Public Instruction Delaine Eastin in the competitive primary for the 4th Assembly District.

Ms. Eastin, a long time Davis resident said in the release, “I’m proud to endorse Cecilia Aguiar-Curry for Assembly because of her willingness to stand up and fight for what she believes in.”  Ms. Eastin, who spent four years in the legislature as an East Bay Assemblymember, was elected in 1994 as the first, and to this date, only woman to serve as State Superintendent of Public Instruction.

She added, “I’ve seen Cecilia in action. She has the ability to bring people together, the strength of character to stand up for her values, a great work ethic, and a history of getting things done. I know that, if she’s elected to serve in the Assembly, she will deliver for our children and make a lasting impact on our state.”

Cecilia Aguiar-Curry is the current Mayor of Winters, a businesswoman, and, along with her three brothers, is a co-owner of a small walnut farm. She has served on the Winters Planning Commission, Winters City Council and is now the first woman Mayor of Winters. Ms. Aguiar-Curry has also been a Board Member of the Water Resources Association of Yolo County and Sacramento Area Council of Governments, and Chair of the Yolo County Housing Commission.

As Mayor and City Councilwoman, her campaign writes that she has made kids and supporting local schools a top priority, including helping secure $600,000 to bring technology to the schools and another $200,000 to provide children with laptops they could use at home for schoolwork.

Her education priorities include, “Upholding the Constitution of California by increasing investment in education such that this state will no longer be near the bottom in per pupil spending.”  She has pledged to invest “in smaller class sizes and making sure every child has access to the wide range of classes, like art, music, theatre, languages, AP and gifted classes, and vocational education.”

Ms. Aguiar-Curry wishes to make sure “our schools are safe havens for teachers, students and staff.”  She supports, “Fully funding pre-kindergarten education for all California 4 year olds.”  She wishes to increase “accountability, support for teachers and parents, and efforts to improve low performing schools in our cities and rural communities” and improve “access to higher education by making tuition more affordable.”

She is running to represent the 4th Assembly District, which encompasses the cities of American Canyon, Calistoga, Clearlake, Davis, Dixon, Lakeport, Napa, Rohnert Park, St. Helena, Williams, Winters, Woodland, and Yountville and all or portions of six counties.

Ms. Aguiar-Curry is opposed by Democrats Dan Wolk, Mayor of the City of Davis and Don Saylor, Supervisor for Yolo County representing parts of Davis and former Mayor.  On Monday, Mr. Saylor released a video campaign commercial.
