Jumpstart Davis, 6:30PM, Wednesday, May 18th, Sophia’s Thai Kitchen

jumpstart-davisDear Startup Enthusiasts,

We have another great Jumpstart Davis speaker line-up for our May mixer at 6:30PM, Wednesday, May 18 at Sophia’s Thai Kitchen.  We hope to see you in attendance!

Featured Speakers include:

Davis Funding Club’s Peter Bell will share with us details of his crowdfunding angel fund he is launching to provide seed capital for Davis-related startups.  Peter is hoping to transform the UC Davis tech transfer process, which would bring all the new technology currently residing in the university’s laboratories more rapidly to the market place.

Blimp Bio Pharma’s Lonnie Bookbinder, MBA, PHD, a long-time Davis resident, will present his new company, Blimp BioPharma to the Davis community. Blimp BioPharma is an anti-cancer company designing, developing and selling unique genetic therapy drugs that target the cause of cancer.  In conjunction with UC-Davis -HM Clause Innovation Center,  Blimp BioPharma will be testing the new drug candidates in Davis and hiring PhD level professionals experienced in cancer therapy and cancer drug studies.

Data Carpentry’s Tracy Teal will be telling us about her non-profit that develops and teaches workshops on the fundamental skills needed to work more effectively with data. Their mission is to provide high-quality, domain-specific training covering the full lifecycle of data-driven research. They accomplish this by training a community of volunteer instructors and collaboratively and openly developing lesson materials. The Data Carpentry community and workshops are a friendly environment for learning that empowers researchers and enables data driven discovery.

Sierra Energy’s CEO, Mike Hart has been building an emerging tech company in the waste-to-energy sector. His other passion is to build up the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Davis, taking advantage of the research and startups coming out of UC Davis. To support this vision, he has created Area 52, a skunkworks style incubator in South Davis, and he has joined the Nishi Gateway team as the developer for the Nishi R&D space. The Nishi Gateway Innovation District will include 325,000 square feet of labs, offices and industrial development space for tech companies that need to be closely linked to UC Davis. But Mike’s vision doesn’t stop there, as he also recognizes the need to help finance these companies and innovations. His concept for the innovation district also includes the launch of the Sierra Development Center, where venture capital and investment funds can have their primary offices in close proximity to the growing innovation hub and knowledge cluster of UC Davis.

Mark your calendars and spread the word.  The more innovative minds present, the more valuable the event for everyone.
