TONIGHT IS THE NIGHT – Vanguard Immigration Symposium – 81 Sponsors for the Event – Tickets Still Available

Immigration Law: Defending Immigrant Rights and Keeping Families Together

Immigration is a huge issue this year with questions about the policy of family separation at the border, the ORR program, the effect of immigration on crime, and the impact of ICE in local courts and the potential chilling effect it will have on people coming forward to cooperate with authorities.

The Vanguard Court Watch 8th Annual Fundraiser and Symposium on Saturday, October 27th addresses these issues from the standpoint of attorneys in the court.

Guest Speakers:

Matt Gonzalez: Chief Attorney with the San Francisco Public Defenders Office.

It features Matt Gonzalez, the Chief Attorney with the San Francisco Public Defenders Office. He was the lead attorney in the politically charged murder trial of immigrant, Jose Garcia Zarate, who was acquitted of murder and manslaughter charges in the fall of 2017.

Holly Cooper: Co-director of the Immigration Law Clinic

Holly Cooper has represented a number of unaccompanied minors who have been caught up in the criminal justice system including “GE” a 14 year old who was held at the Yolo County Juvenile Detention Facility, despite having no criminal record. She was able to get him placed in a Yolo County Foster Home.

Chuck Pacheco: Sacramento Defense Attorney

Chuck Pacheco, is a defense attorney located in Sacramento. In late August, his client was taken into custody by ICE Agents in a Sacramento Court Room. He will speak on this incident.

wonder how many housing development campaigns have ever donated to an immigration symposium?

Most especially housing developments that have (or had or have or do on weekends — I can’t keep track) a tagline of “taking care of our own”.

Does “our own” include undocumented immigrants?  Will seniors moving into WDAAC open up homes in Davis for undocumented immigrants?  Are they “our own”?

Things that make you go:  “Hmmmmmmmmm”.

Alan, maybe it’s just me but it makes one scratch their head to imagine that the Yes On L team were possibly sitting around a table deciding how they’re going to best spend their campaign funds and someone comes up with “let’s donate the food for the Vanguard immigration symposium”.

Maybe it’s just me, and I probably shouldn’t respond but why not. I’m damned proud of what we were able to accomplish this year. We put together a group of speakers including the defense attorney in the Steinle Murder trial which was a national focus and who got his client outright acquitted, we have Holly Cooper who while local, has been featured in national publications on immigration law issues. We put together 80 – count them 80 sponsors – including pretty much every single elected official in Davis. We’ve raised more money than we ever have at one of these events. We’re going to have an amazing event tomorrow and all you can do is focus on one donor. As I said, I’m damn proud of this event. Davis will be able to watch on Davis Media Access.
